In the wake of the recent death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Gingsburg the democratic party has had a jump in contributions. Democrats received over $91 millions dollars within one day of her passing. ActBlue received a record braking $70 Million in donations on Saturday from a total of 1.5 Million contributors. Democrats and Republicans now battle over fulfilling her seat as Trump races to try to appoint someone.
Senator Mitch McConnell is working hard behind the scenes to get enough votes to help Trump get his nominee. This is a complete reversal of his position when President Obama was looking to fulfill the seat left by Justice Antonin Scalia, who passed in 2016. When discussing it in February 2016 Senator McConell stated, “Presidents have a right to nominate, just as the Senate has its constitutional right to provide or withhold consent”. Notably $17 Million has been raised to defeat Senator McConnell in the wake of the death of Justice Ruth Ginsburg. He is being challenged in the general by Kentucky Democrat Amy Mcgrath.
There are two Republican senators so far who have spoken publicly that the the nomination should wait until after the the November Presidential election, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Susan Collins (R-Maine). The Democrats would need at least two more votes to block the Senate from making a nomination.
