It was in 2019 at a Community Board 9 meeting where Medgar Evers student at the time Sakia Fletcher approached Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo. The issue was over the use of a community development project the Bedford Union Armory. Fletcher stated that she signed up to speak, but was not allowed to speak at the time and in the end a heated debate ensued. The Councilwoman can be heard saying “This is why we fail as a people”. The next day Sakia Fletcher the student body president-elect at the time was suspended for 10 days. Fletcher told the Daily New “You Should not be afraid to speak up”. The amount she is suing for is unspecified and it’s noted it was around the time of finals a very stressful time for college students. Her lawyers states, she was unable to fully participate in her daily class preparations during that time. Cumbo and Medgar Evers were given until October to respond to the allegations by a Southern District of New York Judge.
